What to do if you have lost your original documents
Last verified: 4 August 2026
Losing the original is serious but recoverable. Acting quickly matters, because a lost document in the wrong hands can be used before you replace it.
Immediately
- Report the loss in writing to the society or the sub-registry, and to the police. A police report is required by most authorities before a duplicate is issued.
- Publish a loss notice in a newspaper if the society requires it — most do.
- Ask the society or authority to place a hold on any transfer of that property pending replacement.
Then
- Society property: apply to the transfer office for a duplicate allotment or transfer letter, with the police report, the newspaper notice, an affidavit and your CNIC
- Revenue land: a registered deed is a public record. Obtain a certified copy from the sub-registry where it was registered — the original is convenience, the register is proof
- Obtain a fresh fard in either case
The reassuring part: for registered property, the register is the ownership, not the paper. A lost registry does not lose you the property.
