How to cancel a power of attorney

Last verified: 4 August 2026

Revocation is not effective merely because you have decided it. It must be recorded and communicated, or a third party dealing with your attorney in good faith may still be protected.

The steps

  1. Execute a deed of revocation, attested at the Pakistani mission in the same way as the original.
  2. Register the revocation with the same office where the power of attorney was registered.
  3. Serve written notice on the attorney, by a method that produces proof of delivery.
  4. Notify the society transfer office, the sub-registry and the land record office in writing, and ask them to record it.
  5. Publish a revocation notice in a newspaper circulating where the property is.
  6. Obtain written confirmation from the society that the revocation has been recorded on the file.

DO THIS THE MOMENT THE TASK IS DONE Most powers of attorney that cause harm were granted for a legitimate purpose years earlier and simply never cancelled. Revocation costs a few thousand rupees. Not revoking has cost people their property.
